In Vitro Maturation of Oocytes (IVM)
In vitro maturation of oocytes (IVM) is a procedure revolutionized in Europe and now available at DVIF&G;'s START program and at a few other facilities in the U.S. The patients undergoing IVT-ET are at high risk to develop severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), especially if they suffer from polycystic ovaries (PCO). During the IVM procedure patients are treated with gonadotropins for only three days, and the developing oocytes are retrieved and matured in the laboratory for fertilization and embryo transfer. This approach substantially reduces the amount of medication given, the office visits, ultrasounds, and blood tests that the patients receive, resulting in a significant decrease in the cost and time invested.
