PCOS (Syndrome X)

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is another common cause of infertility in women. Traced most often to chronic insulin resistance, PCOS causes women to develop an excess of male hormones (androgens). This overproduction of androgens suppresses egg development and can damage the eggs themselves, causing fertility problems.

Endometriosis

A common disorder that affects up to one in ten women in their reproductive years, and is linked to infertility in approximately 20 to 40 percent of female factor cases. Symptoms of this common disorder are painful periods (dysmenorrhea), chronic pelvic pain, and dyspareunia (painful intercourse). Many women with the condition, however experience no symptoms.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

a serious infection of the female reproductive organs, is usually caused by sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea or chlamydia. If detected and treated early with antibiotics, fertility can be restored.

Assorted Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, pituitary disorders, thyroid disorders, adrenal disorders, certain cancers, and other conditions can also cause both men and women to become infertile.

Male Fertility Problems

Most male infertility cases occur due to sperm production problems. Three important factors of the sperm are 1. count, 2. motility, and 3. morphology (shape). The male may produce too few sperm (oligospermia) or no sperm (azoospermia). It's also considered abnormal if less than 50 percent of the sperm in the ejaculate are motile (asthnospermia) or if there are too many abnormally shaped sperm (teratospermia).

Female Fertility Problems

Most female factor problems involve ovulation disorders. If a woman doesn't ovulate, eggs are not available to be fertilized. Symptoms of this problem include irregular menstrual periods or not menstruating at all (amenorrhea). Too much stress, poor nutrition, and intense athletic training can affect a woman's hormonal balance, causing menstrual problems.

Emotional Counseling

Studies have shown that positive thinking and stress management techniques can help couples conceive. DVIF&G's Medical & Behavioral Therapy unit counsels patients on how to deal with the uncertainty of infertility and other medical conditions.

Nutritional Counseling

Research has shown that obese women are two times more likely to be infertile than women of healthy weight. DVIF&G's Medical Nutrition Therapy unit provides our patients with medical nutrition counseling to help them lose the weight they need to conceive and deliver healthy babies.

Ultrasonography

At DVIF&G we take pride in having the most innovative ultrasound techniques in early embryonic ultrasound. The pictures below demonstrate some anatomic details visualized in some of our early embryos.
