PCOS (Syndrome X)

A common cause of infertility in women, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is treatable. Eating a well-balanced diet, adopting a low-impact exercise program, and learning to manage daily stress can control PCOS in most cases.

Traced most often to chronic insulin resistance, PCOS causes many physical symptoms, including irregular menstrual cycles, excessive hair growth, acne, and obesity. This little known condition can not only impede a woman’s ability to become pregnant but her ability to carry to term as well. Chronic insulin resistance causes the ovaries to produce too many male hormones, which can suppress egg maturation and even damage the eggs themselves.

The good news is that chronic insulin resistance and PCOS can be controlled if it’s detected early. Our institute is one of the very few facilities anywhere that can not only detect but treat the condition as well. At DVIF&G, we take a “team” approach to the treatment of insulin resistance and PCOS. Dr. Chung H.Wu, a leading expert in the field of insulin resistance and PCOS and director of DVIF&G’s PCOS Early Detection and Treatment Program works with nutritionists and Karen Ann Brook, MSW, LCSW, director of DVIF&G’s Medical and Behavioral Treatment Program, to successfully treat the condition.

DVIF&G’s Unique Treatment Program

There’s renewed hope for infertile women with insulin resistance and other metabolic disorders, according to studies conducted by Dr. Chung H. Wu, director of DVIF&G’s PCOS Early Detection and Treatment Program.

In the last few years Dr. Wu treated over 1,000 patients with metabolic syndrome, not only those who were insulin resistant (IR), but also prediabetic and diabetic patients.

Dr. Wu emphasized lifestyle adjustments to the patients, including adopting a balanced, low-carbohydrate, low fat, and high fiber diet, gentle regular exercise, and stress management, with or without insulin sensitizing agents, such as Metformin® and Avanda®. In addition, he gave the patients multivitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, and Omega-3 fatty acids to improve their general health.

Patients who wanted to become pregnant were also given ovulation injection agents followed up with ARTs as a last resort.
