Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a serious infection of the female reproductive organs, is usually caused by sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea or chlamydia. If detected and treated early with antibiotics, fertility can be restored. If left untreated, the fallopian tubes may become damaged, causing infertility and increasing the risk of a future ecoptic pregnancy (a pregnancy that develops outside the uterus, usually in one fallopian tube).
